Facts About: The University of Mississippi Program in
BANKING and
FINANCE
Career Outlook
Banking is a service business that plays an
integral part in both the economic and social life of the community. Bankers
identify financial needs in every segment of our society and develop bank
services to help fill those needs. The very success of the business depends on
the ability of its people to market needed services to the community.
The banking industry is looking for alert, bright, people-oriented prospects who have self-confidence and problem-solving ability. To meet the needs of its customers, banks have created new services and, as a result, are employing more people with a wide range of abilities. This expansion of services means that you will have the opportunity for rapid advancement. The salary range for banking and finance graduates has been highly competitive with other comparable service industries and many financial service firms are paying a signing bonus for recent graduates.
Exclusive Senior-Year Courses
The two senior-year courses,

Home of the MBA Chair of Banking
The Mississippi Bankers Association Chair of Banking is located at Ole Miss Chair. Organized in 1958, the Chair provides continues leadership for the Banking and Finance Program. The Chair of Banking is housed in the Economics and Finance Department in Conner Hall, which is near the center of the campus and is devoted completely to business disciplines. The current Chairholder is Professor Robert O. Edmister, a distinguished scholar with full time employment experience in a commercial bank and two national bank regulatory agencies.
Internships in Banks
The Banking and Finance program emphasizes on-the-job training and work experience. Summer and concurrent internships provide opportunities for work experience, facilitate valuable employer contacts, and extra money. Many students intern between their junior and senior years in their hometowns while many others intern during the academic year at banks located within commuting distance to the University. The internship program is flexible and optional, providing students with a tailored experience and bankers with exposure to the next generation of bank leaders.
Beyond the Bachelor's Degree
The Banking and Finance program at Ole Miss prepares students for both beginning work experiences and for graduate education in business or law school. The University offers three graduate degree programs that have substantial banking content--the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), the Master of Arts in Economics and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Business Administration. The School of Business Administration is fully accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
